Range Quail

Range is the base our whole line is built on. Every bird on this page is a Range bird. What changes between them is which extra traits they carry. That makes this group the clearest way we have to show how quail color actually works.

How to Read This Group

Nine Range birds. They differ from one another in only two ways, which is exactly what makes them a good teaching set.

Base color: RangeMuted gray-brown with fine scalloping and pale shaft streaks. Every bird here has it. Galadriel shows it with nothing else added.
Tuxedo: white spottingWhite bib and belly against the colored cap and back. How much white varies a lot from bird to bird. Compare Aragorn, who wears it as a bib, with Samwise, whose white covers most of the body.
Fee: red pulled backWarm chestnut tones reduced to sand and cream, pattern still visible. Compare Arwen (no Fee) with Legolas (Fee).
White on the chest tells you about tuxedo, not about the sex In wild-type Coturnix the breast is sexually dimorphic: cocks carry a plain reddish-brown breast and hens a paler breast with dark speckling, which is why so much beginner advice says to sex quail by looking at the chest. That method does not work on Range birds. Range is built on extended brown, and the varieties built on extended brown (Range, Tibetan, Rosetta and the tuxedo forms of them) are not feather-sexable, because the cock and hen breast patterns are no longer different from one another. There is published support for the same effect in a related mutation: the study that mapped the panda white-spotting locus records that, unlike wild type, the panda phenotype shows no sexual dimorphism at all.

So on the birds below, white versus brown on the chest is a statement about tuxedo and nothing else. We sex these birds by vent examination of the cloacal gland, not by looking at plumage, and we would tell any buyer to do the same. We had two birds recorded under the wrong sex this summer (Range 2 and Range 7) and both are corrected here.
A second honest caution, about color Heavy tuxedo marking removes so much colored feather that judging Fee by eye also stops being reliable. A bird can read as pale simply because most of its breast is white, which has nothing to do with red reduction. Where we are not sure, this site says so rather than picking the flattering answer.

The Genetics, Honestly

Every gene and every breeder term behind these birds now lives on one page, with the published sources separated from the breeder convention and worked examples photographed from our own birds. It used to be repeated here and there, which meant it could drift out of step with itself.

Poultry Sale

Sunday, August 9, 1:00 PM · Barn A

Six of our nine Range birds are entered in the Boulder County Fair poultry sale. These are jumbo-line breeding birds, not market birds, and every one of them has been handled almost daily since hatch, so they are steady to pick up rather than wild. If you are starting or refreshing a Coturnix line, come and handle them. Colin will walk you through what each one carries and what we have not been able to confirm.
